“What do you mean you’ve signed us up for a marathon?”

HUSBAND AND WIFE SURPRISE PHONE CALL

I received a phone call early last week from my excited husband to say “Did I receive his email?” I hadn’t as I had been driving between my neuro physio clients in Cobham, Guildford and Cranleigh that morning. “Keep the 3rd October free!” he went on to say. Now, in my head, I was thinking SPA DAY! I was momentarily giddy.  He must have booked us a spa day to celebrate our wedding anniversary 2days earlier.

Then came the revelation “I’VE BOOKED US BOTH ON TO THE VIRTUAL MARATHON!!!”

Stunned silence from me.

“What do you mean you’ve signed us up for a marathon?”

MID LIFE CRISIS : WIFE IN CRISIS

I love my husband. We met as passionate and driven physiotherapists in West Sussex and travelled for work together around London, Guildford, then Hampshire.  We’ve now settled in the beautiful market town of Petersfield with our two beautiful children. Ben is constantly surprising me and this phone call wasn’t exactly my favourite surprise he had sprung on me over the years we have been together. We got engaged in Italy, which was a lovely surprise, so a surprise marathon entry didn’t quite compare.

My after thoughts from the phone call were, was he going through a mid-life crisis? But then I remembered how when we had together achieved his first half marathon some moons ago, he had always had the bug and desire to complete a full marathon 26.2miles. 26.2miles!!

This is when I go into “wife crisis.”

MY INITIAL REACTION… SELF- SABOTAGE to HEALTH KICK

In the first week I’ve had to process my “surprise” – I think I went into self-sabotage mode. I ate my way through the contents of the kitchen cupboards. Chocolate became the new 5x/day and I hadn’t exercised as much as I should have. It took to the point of my husband questioning whether I was pregnant? For me to have a stern chat to myself, that we could do this!!

“He’s got the running bug!” - Ben and I completing the Yeovil Half Marathon together – I was 8 weeks pregnant and rather pale!

WE CAN DO THIS!!

We recently completed an amazing community challenge with local Petersfield runners, walkers and Petersfield Town Football Club. Together as a community we ran over 2000km in one week to raise money (£1555) to say THANK YOU to our local NHS staff at Petersfield Community Hospital. During this week, I’d been motivated to get up at 04:45 in the morning to go for a run.

This is the year for me. To lose the “baby weight” I’ve comfortably clung onto. To get my health, fitness and nutrition in order, to look after my body. To find the time for me, as a busy working mum, to exercise and have time for myself to help maintain a healthy mind.

Our joint venture Body and Mind Physiotherapy – encompasses both fitness of the body and mind.  We are used to looking after clients with musculoskeletal (body) and neurological (mind) difficulties – now its time to practice what we preach – watch this space!
